1966 cavalier model #css-64fs

the machine runs great.  it keeps the pop and beer ice cold.  but, the compressor stays on continually.  shouldn't it kick on and off?  would the thermostat be broken?

Hi & welcome!   I'll say off hand that you've got a stuck Thermostat, or it's shorted out & causing the compressor to run constantly, so if you unplug the machine, then remove one of the wires off of the back of the thermostat (tape it up with some electrical tape so it doesn't short out to the machine or shock you) Now, plug it back in, if the compressor DOESN"T come on then you've got the culprit! if it still runs then we'll have too dig a little deeper, maybe a short in the wires going to it (they tend to become brittle & crack leaving them prone to shorting out) that would also cause the constant running (I'm surprised the bottles didn't freeze! (Unless they're all beers  ':<img:'> )  the fix will set you back between $40-50 bucks (U.S. $ if you're in Canada-land) so take a look & be careful & lets see what's going on here...JohnieG

thanks for the info.  i unplugged it for now as i don't need a high electric bill.  i'll check it out over my vacation and let you know if i figured it out.  if i need a new thermostat, where do i get it?  do i need a specific one for the machine or can i go to a appliance store and get a generic one?

the beer and pop don't freeze, but sometimes they have a bit of ice crystals.

thanx

Grainger industrial supply has them , or a refrigeration/HVAC supply house ( around here/Detroit there's APPCO) they are used in reach in beverage coolers, & Ice machines, just make sure the cut-out (point at which it will turn the compressor off) is 32-38 deg. F or you could freeze the bottles, also check with the suppliers here under parts suppliers section, just be sure to tell 'em what you're putting it into..JohnieG
