My parents were just down for the weekend and my mother gave me a framed photo of my grandfather (who died when I was 5) next to a Pepsi cart/machine. I was hoping that somebody might be able to help me identify it. I see that it is a "double-dot" but I've never seen the slogan, "QUALITY" and "QUANTITY" before. Thanks in advance.

It looks like a Westinghouse Master chest, I noticed the familiar lines and the embossed Ice Cold and ribs on the lower part of the machine. Am I wrong??

It does have some resemblance, but I thought Westinghouse was just Coke machines and there is no cap catcher.

Was this common for Pepsi signs of this size to be put over the Coke embossing? It looks like a hole was even cut for the water run-off.

Awesome picture! that would be the center piece to my collection! Yeah they all took from each other..Just a cool metal sign bolted over a Master.... You need to find that sign and a master and recreate that! I'd have that picture blown up, matted and framed that over the cooler. Very cool!

Eric,
That is exactly what my mother did. She blew up the picture, matted it and gave it to me as a birthday gift. It will hang over my Ideal Pepsi Slider when I am finished with it...And actually you've hit on my intent of identifying the machine...Has anyone seen a sign like this one? Can you point me in the right direction? I'd love to add the machine to my collection as a way of reconnecting with my grandfather -- like I said, he died when I was very young.

Has anyone seen anything like this sign? I've seen that Pepsi logo before, but I've never seen Pepsi use that slogan, "QUALITY" "QUANTITY". I suppose I could recreate the sign. Any consensus on whether this is a standard or a junior? It looks too small to be a master.

After looking at the picture again it appears to be a standard. They are fairly easy to obtain on the sign your best be would be to find a pepsi book and see if you can find one in there.

Like Joey said, the cooler is the easiest to find. You could start on the sign today. Someone here can give you a dimension. The Pepsi logo can be copied for transfer onto a metal sign and the "Quality / Quantity" are standard letters so they are easy. The Westinghouse will have embossed letters so the sign will not lay flat. May I suggest : Since you are also trying to duplicate the raised ridge around the outside of the sign, maybe weld some metal tubing around the outside as a frame. This will also keep the metal level with the raised letters underneath.
I think it would be fun to say " Here is the cooler in the picture"

Like you said the standard is a common machine. Just pound the embossing in with a hammer. That is most likely what Pepsi did. You could even cut the embossing out and weld in a flat piece and then you wouldn't even need a sign. You would have a generic westinghouse standard. Just have the vinyl Pepsi sign made.

Here in another one! Josh - I wouldn't say these are hard to find. I see them pop up fairly often. Jeff Walter's gives them a rarity rating of 1 in a 1-5 scale and avg. cond. value of about $300. This one has the original lids, which are frequently rusted out

Thanks Tom. I've actually been in touch with the seller and it seems like the dimensions on this are bigger than the one in Texas. He/she offered to sell it to me for $100 but I just don't have the space for it right now as I just bought two more sliders and a Vendo 63 within the last 3 weeks. I haven't even picked those up and now candy machines have caught my fancy. You know you have problems when you are actually considering moving just to get more space to support your habit. Maybe I'll give her/him the $100 and ask them to hold it for a couple months until it warms up a bit. The only problem is that it looks like they are keeping it outside. FYI -- he/she says that the lids are pretty much rusted out.

Damn you Tom! Lol. I just made them the offer I was talking about. I guess for $100 it is worth it. I pass through that way a few times a year anyway. When you have lids with a considerable amount of rust, can you clean out the rust and fill with bondo. I know it wouldn't be the best solution, but I'm not looking for perfection, especially since I think most of the money in this machine will be in recreating the sign.

Thanks Glen. I'll look into it once I am able to look at how bad the lids are on the ones I just bought.
The seller just contacted me again and said she would deliver the cooler to me for $50. Since it would cost me about $25 just in tolls, well worth it to me. In for $100, in for $50 more.

I'm stripping down the cooler and I'm having some difficulty getting the bolts that hold the cap catcher in place. Should I be able to get these out with a little bit of work (are they threaded) or am I going to need to drill them out? The bolts I'm talking about are on either side of the bottle opener on the pic below. Also, did this Westinghouse cooler have cap catchers on the back AND front?

No, I wasn't planning on taking the liner out because everything appears to be in great shape (no rust, sealed up pretty tight). I'm actually surprised how little rust there is on the machine considering its age and the fact that it was apparently left outside in the New Jersey elements for quite some time.

If my memory serves me on these coolers, they are threaded in and the nut on the backside is spot welded to the cabinet. Gently tap on the end of a proper fitting screw driver while keeping pressure in a counter-clockwise rotation in the hopes to loosen the screw... Once you get one out the other should be easier since you can now rotate the bottle opener to loosen the screw.

Jim, Unfortunately there is no place for a screw driver head to be inserted into the bolt as it looks almost like a carriage bolt. I've tried spraying with a penetrating spray and then using pliers, but I can't get it to budge. I will ultimately need to remove them because I need to put a sign over the front of the machine, the question is whether I cut the heads off and then drill out or otherwise.

My bad... I didn't read your message thoroughly...
These studs are spot welded in place and can only be removed by cutting then grinding flat for your senario or intentions. Is this necessary because the sign is too big...

QUOTE Is this necessary because the sign is too big... I'm going to try and get a replica of this sign (the one pictured below) made up for me and since it covers the entire face, I'll need to get rid of those bolts. I'm really hoping I can put the sign on the front without taking a hammer to the embossing to knock it in. Anyone think I stand a chance? I cringe at the thought of taking a hammer to any machine. Also, does anyone know if the color of the cooler would have been kept red (for Coke) or would Pepsi have painted it blue? It is tough to tell from a B&W picture, but it looks like it might have been kept red. Thoughts? Thanks again for everyone's help.

It's obviously a dark color and I've never seen Pepsi machines any color other than blue. If you're getting the sign repro'd ten you shouldn't have any problem preserving the embossing. Just make sure the outside roll on the sign is deeper than the raised embossing. As another suggestion... why not wait for a generic cooler. Preserve the value of the embossed machine and not need to worry about the depth of the repro'd sign?

My understanding is that the machine in the picture is a Westinghouse Coke cooler that Pepsi took and placed there own sign over. I want to replicate the exact look and my thought is that Pepsi didn't bother painting the machine blue. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but would a generic cooler have "ICE COLD" written on the bottom and the unique ridging underneath?

The only machine I could find that same double dot logo on was on the General Electric Standard. A blue "wave" above and below red Pepsi letters. Could this help identify the blue from red in your pic? I would leave the cooler red, it's now obvious that wouldn't contradict the picture you have.

You're a genius MoonDawg! Now why didn't I think to look at the Pepsi logo, which I actually have a tin sign of! You are correct, the Pepsi lettering is red which seems to more closely match the color of the cooler than the rest of the logo, which is blue. Thanks for everyone's help.
