In several auctions, I have ended up in competition with a fellow member over an item. Not intentionally - both of us were snipe bidding at the end. It has happened between Moondawg and I and again last night between Signguy (I think) and me on a V81b. If it wasn't for one of us, the other would have won the 81 for $735. Instead, it sold for $1025. Now that is a shame that we couldn't have known about each others intent. I usually snipe at the end, but throw a small bid in early to get it in my ebay bidding page.
I tried to find 90grad's listing of ebay/SMC names, but came up empty. I thought it was pinned at the top of a forum. Here is what I propose. If anybody has any suggestions, let's get it going and save each other some money. Everybody "call" the items you are interested in by placing a small bid like I do. If another member sees the listing and has an interest, just PM the bidding member and ask if they really want it or if they care if you take it. We just need to communicate! '>

That or we could have a member only section that would be a heads up for ebay auctions. I know that I hate to post about auctions that I entend on bidding on because there are alot of guests that visit here. If it were a members only section it would cut down on that problem. Just a thought.

QUOTE I know that I hate to post about auctions that I entend on bidding on because there are alot of guests that visit here. I agree - I don't post auctions that I am interested in just for that reason. There has to be some solution though - I don't know how many Forum spots Jim has to spare, but I kind of like the Soda Jerk section idea. I think we all have enough respect for each other that we would step on somebody's toes and you would have to have been around a while in order to access the posts.

Yea, maybe in the Soda Jerk area we can post auctions that we are interested in bidding on or maybe ask Jim to start another category in the Members Area. Something like "Interested Auctions", "Auction Alert" or "Don't Be a Jerk, Soda Jerk" (okay, last one was a joke). I agree that we don't need people lurking and seeing what we are interested in and how much we may be willing to pay.

I'm with the good doctor. I like to know what people are thinking about bidding on but at the same time I am also aware that there are people out there who just read and don't post.
A members only section would be great.

It's hard to regulate what you are willing to pay versus what another member is willing to pay. I recently purchased a Stoner machine that another member wanted, near the end of the auction it appeared they weren't in the bidding anymore so I sniped it at $335. They had pooped out around $200. How can you tell if they are waiting to snipe or out of gas? It's tough to call dibs on a 7up 81 when you are only willing or able to pay $2000 for it and others are able or willing to be more realistic.
just my 10 cents

The thread I started used to be pinned until about a month or so ago. I don't know what happened to it. Regardless, I agree we need to have some way to communicate about this stuff. Granted, an auction is an auction, but we are friends here and we also don't want to run the price up on eachother.

QUOTE How can you tell if they are waiting to snipe or out of gas? That is why we need to communicate about it. I agree that to ask a member to step aside on a VMC 7Up 81 because you want it for $2000 is unrealistic, but if there was just some correspondence between us then it would be beneficial to all concerned. I personally don't care that Signguy won it (another will come around), but it is a shame that $300 was wasted.
QUOTE The thread I started used to be pinned until about a month or so ago. Yeah - I couldn't find it. Jim added the Route 66 Transportation forum about that time - maybe it got misplaced in the rearranging.

QUOTE What thread are you looking for? 90grad posted a thread which listed about 20 SMC member names along with their corresponding eBay user names. I can find a thread discussing the subject, but not the actual thread that list the names. The missing thread with the list used to be pinned at the top of a forum (Sorry - I can't remember which one).

I usually bookmark an item I'm interested in That way no one sees I'm bidding on an item... I watch a candy machine buyer all the time.... (As far as I know he's not a memeber here, he bids on bubblegum machines) I see what he has bid on, seems to find all the ones I like, he never bids over $40.. so he seems to be looking for deals) Anyway...it saves money in not bidding early and no one out there will run you and the price up... Yeah we just need something/somewhere to check to see who's bidding... If there's something out there that someone really wants to finish off a collection I don't mind stepping aside. That's why I like posting things I find on eBay that might be o interest of someone here.....

QUOTE Anyway...it saves money in not bidding early and no one out there will run you and the price up... That's why I'll just bid $10 or so on a $9.99 item. I'll let somebody outbid me, but they are going to stop bidding after one bid and not bid the item up until they are winning. Then I'll snipe at the end. Sometimes I bid because "at that price, I can't lose" and I never bid again because I really don't need it. If a member were to contact me in either case, I'd step aside or plead my case if I desparately want it. Something could definately be worked out. Like you (Eric (and others)), I'll step aside if somebody really wants it. There are plenty of machines out there for the members of this cyber-community and another will come around.

I'm listening...
As far as the ebay name list, during the consolidation of the two forums, I may have inadvertantly deleted it instead of migrating the topic into the new forum...
This shouldn't be that difficult to reproduce...
As for the member bidding notifications, this could be a little more difficult as it will depend on you, the member, to post the auction info and include a possible price so others know where you stand on an item. The downfall is people will begin to slack off on posting the info and we'll be back at square one with members not knowingly bidding against each other...
I'll keep listening and see if a solution is possible that we can implement here...

Jim, Did you ever figure out why posts in the Soda Jerk section do not show up when the "New Posts" link is clicked? This would help if an area in that "Members Only" section were to be used. It will take a little more effort; but, as with anything 'new', it takes time to get in the habit. I don't think members would need to post their max bid. Just a note indicating the auction and your interest. If another member has an interest in it also, then just contact the topic starter and work it out. Take the V81 for example, if Signguy had contacted me and said "This one is right near me - I don't own a 'b' model 81", then I would have said "OK" and he would have saved $300. It is still a great buy at $1025, but $735 would have been better and I'm sure he would agree.

I do agree we do need a area that we can communicate in private for ebay auctions, local auctions, etc. I would even pay money if I had to, to help the site grow just for this option. If you need someone to look after it I'd be interested in that as well.
There has been dozens of times that me and Collecture have battled, sniped etc before we knew who we were dealing with. a couple occasions I did not bid on items because of other bidders here bidding. Only to find out they didnt win and that item went cheaper and that I could have owned that item.
WE NEED SOMETHING

QUOTE I was going to post the fact that I was bidding on it and tell others it was local for me, but too was concerned that a "Visitor" would catch wind and bid against me. When an item like the 81B is not advertised well, I would never post anything either. I was actually the first to bid on it and was hoping '> that not many people would find it and I would get it for $9.99. When I see an item not advertised well, I always put a bid in to prevent the seller from changing the title or description. I glad a fellow member got it anyway - too bad it couldn't have been a better deal for you. If I had really wanted it (and I do eventually want an 81B and C and D), my bid would have been higher - but from the bidding, I figured $1000 might take it. I really don't see too many machines locally here, so I keep trying for decent deals with shipping. Joey and I & Glen and I have had our crossovers and we need to stop running the price up on each other. I think the Frappr Map helps to know where people are. I have simply emailed Joey when I see something near him and I have emailed Glen here and there with items I find in his area. Sometimes communication outside of the public forums is the best way. Oh well, let's figure something out so this doesn't keep happening!

Keeping 200 SMC members away from an item is a drop in the bucket, when you consider how many other E-bay bidders that may also be watching it. If Sleepwalk had seen this 81, nobody here would have won it! This auction was still open to everybody else, and that should be considered when sniping.

I would be glad to communicate with others about what I am looking at on Ebay. I would not want to step on anyone's feet here either. I am a long way from getting to join the elite forum, so how would I know?
Like Moondawg mentioned though. I don't think it is really us who we have to worry about. It is the other people not in this group we have to worry about.

Also, Collecture mentioned he bids on small items when he finds them. I know some guys who always look to see what the "big guys" are buying so they can sneak in and get it.
I also know some people in the gas and oil hobby who have 2 Ebay IDs one for selling and one for buying. I don't want to give anyone here any ideas, but that could be bad.

Now I f I've run across something that I've seen and like it and there is ebay user name that I recognized the current bidder (Johnie G ) and I will drop him a line to let him know that I'm not going to bid againest him.

I also agree with Glen that we are a drop in the bucket, but collectively we are a pretty big drop. Marvin has a good point that he and others would not be able to access the coveted SJ areas, while still being part of the collective drop. And, yes Marvin, I too have looked at other's ID to see what they are bidding on. They can find out what I have found and outbid me, but they never know what my snipe bid will be (if I bid again). I guess the only way is for us to maintain a list of member/eBay names and hope that members will remember to check before bidding. We cannot own everything, but we can work together.

I think by using that and the Frapper device... we should all be able to help one another out and not "step on toes" so to speak... For me personally... I don't plan on bidding on much , unless it's close to me and I can buy it without having to figure in shipping...
