I am currently looking for an original coin mech for my vmc 44 - but I am sure it could take some time to locate one. How does the new one made by Home Arcade rate? I will keep looking for an original, but I am thinking of putting one of these in for now? How do they look? Price? Any input is appreciated...!!!

I wish HAC would post a picture of their coin unit. Do you have a picture of it? They say it takes dimes only! The originals could take pennies, nickels, dime or quarter and price changes can easily be made to convert the mech to take 5¢, 6¢, 7¢, 10¢, 11¢ or 12¢. I am not sure if you would ever get the $370+S&H price tag back if you go to sell it.
I don't think it would be too hard for a machine shop to replace the shaft of another mech with a VMC44 length. A V81 change-giver mech just sold on eBay for $192. All you would need to find out is how long the 44 shaft is.

Good point.... Does anyone know if the shaft can be machined - lengthened - to fit a 44? I will email steve and see what he thinks...... Thanks

Here are a couple of pics of a large door mech shaft broken down to the basics.
Looks like the 'hook' is riveted together and then riveted to the shouldered collar on the shaft (one of the collar rivets is a post type - top of second pic).

If its made out of metal it can be machined into what ever one wants. Problem is most machinist charge a fortune for making parts, thats why for th $1000 its going to cost me to make some things, I prefer to buy the machine lol..

I agree; however, if you get an original mech for even $250 (which can be done easily), I don't think it would cost more than $100 (at most) to retrofit a 1/2 rod with a few holes drilled into it. So you come out with a vintage mech in your vintage machine for less than the price of the Home Arcade mech. |

I just extended the rod on a large door mech for my VMC88 a month or so ago. It was easy. I went to Ace hardware and they had the exact size rod. I cut it to length and ground down the two parts being welded so I would have a channel to run the bead. I just put the bar in a vice and scored a spot where I wanted the hole and drilled it with a hand drill. I had my brother-in-law weld it and then grinded down the weld and it was done. It took less than an hour and the only cost was the rod and it was only $7-$10. No big deal at all and it worked great.
