Anderson, is that one the Westinghouse that you got in Alexandria for $76 or something like that?  Would love to see more pics of it.  It looks pretty good in that picture.

Yes, that is the Westinghouse DU-144 that I got for $76.00.  Thanks for the lead on that one Dan! It's in rough shape on the bottom, but I could not let a deal like that pass. Here are some more pics of it. Ya'll can see, I'll have my hands full with the bottom. Any ideas would be helpful. I'm at work now, so I'll have to have story time on the rest later.

Wow!!
I'd love to have all the 81's....maybe someday '<img'>  Very impressive! How many years did it take you to acquire all of them?

I see a few of those DU144's, but not a lot. Easiest would be to find another cabinet, but there goes your $76 cost basis.

It took me a long time to collect all those machines, I traded some, haggled others, and stole a few (just kidding).  I started collecting when I was about 15, I'm 32 now. My collecting began when my brother and I were cutting grass around the small town I grew up in on the Missisippi/Lousianna line and an elderly lady asked us to clean-up her old abondoned country store.  Looking back, it was a gold mine.  For a days worth of work we ended up with several machines and signs. I've been traded ever since, it's kinda of addicting as ya'll know.  I plan to restore all of the 81's.  I'm going to make one of the generic machines an Orange Crush.  I'm still looking for a vintage round Dr. Pepper sign to put on the front of the other generic machine.  If anyone has one, please let me know.  I'm thinking of selling or trading the milk 81, maybe for another generic 81 (Barq's Rootbeer).  Dan, call me when you would like to come out.

If you started collecting then, I bet you got some of the machines for pennies on the dollar.
I bought my first machine (VMC27) in 1972 (I was 12). The parents of a friend of mine were having a garage sale. The machine was priced at $45 on Friday, $30 on Saturday and finally $15 on Sunday (I could afford that). My parents did not want me to have it, so I wheel-barrowed it home (3 blocks). It was painted white when I got it and I proceeded to cover it in STP stickers and 7-11 Slurpee feet stickers and just about any other sticker I thought was cool at the time.
Fun hobby - keep it up Anderson - you got a fabulous start!

Ah yes, my first machine VMC 33. Was sitting on the patio of an apartment in San Diego 1980 and was pretty faded from the sun. Lady said her husband saved it from an old gas station that was being torn down. Well he moved out and left this behind and it became mine for $50.00.  I had no idea what I was going to do with it, but it was just so cool looking, small with round corners..... took me back to the old country store in the farming town where I grew up.
It sat in my garage for years as I thought the small bottles had been dis-continued.  When I found I could buy them from the Coke warehouse, I brought the machine to my shop and and set it up in the rear for employees.
I thought I was the only person to have saved something this useless until I met Jeff Walters at a trade show and found that I could get all the decals and parts I needed to bring this little baby back to life. Other people were doing this too???
My employees loved this little machine, so you guessed it...as a group effort, we had it painted and shining like new within a few weeks.
Well, it looked so nice now that it no longer belonged hidden in the back of an auto shop, so we moved it into the front office and our customers became thrilled!  I soon realized that the 50 cents I lost on each bottle was actually a great investment. It puts the potential customer in a happy mood and they are much more willing to do buisness here, than with my competition.
It didn't take long for the inevidable. Customer puts in a dime, pushes the handle, recieves a cold Coke, pops the cap, takes a long drink............and wants to BUY the machine!!!
And so today antique soda machine restoration and sales account for 30% of our buisness.

I was there!  Great collection!  Just got back from about a 30 mile drive to see them.  Anderson is a great guy with a nice family.  My 5 year old enjoyed entertaining his son and talked about it on the way home, along with wondering why I wouldn't "buy the Pepsi machine".
