That is a good question...but how would anyone know? Since most descriptions of 102s include the bit about some being set up one side for whites etc...I think it has become part of the lore of a 102...regardless of if it was used that way or not.
Didn't one sell on Ebay a year or so ago for 18K- 20K?

The guy in LA? I don't think it reached his reserve. He has a restored Mills machine on eBay right now and the Cav102 is pictured with the 'other' machines he has for sale. He had "signs" for his also, but they mounted above the coin door.
The machine in GA looks pretty darn good for an original. It appears to me that the cap catcher and coin box are repros though, so maybe the signs are aftermarket as well. I seriously doubt that every 102 had segregation signs put upon them.

The restored 102 belongs to Garry and is here at my store as well as the rest of those machines in his listing. Jeff's book lists the fact that the 102 was designed to serve twice as many people in the same amount of time (lunch hour maybe) ? That implies there must have been people who did not always get along, lined up to use the Coke machine and may shed some light on the REAL reason for the segregation. I heard that the original signs were made of brass and mounted on top of the machine. The signs in this auction do not look proper for that era.

$10,000 and counting! Reserve not yet met though - I would have thought 10k would have reached the reserve.

I think one of the books mentions that the 102s were place on islands with gas pumps...so folks on either side of the island could be served.

How hard would it be to build one out of two Cav 51s?

"$10,000 and counting!" Great, just when we thought we had gotten rid of people selling unrestored square tops for $3,000 and calling a Vendo 63 one of the rarest machines, we will start getting people selling their Cavalier 51s for a fortune..."If a 102 is going for $10,000, my 51 must be worth at least half that...."

I'm curious about fabricating a fake.. Would you just weld 2x 51's back to back or what ?
I'm guessing the 102 still uses a single compressor and everything tho ? (ie. only the vend mech is duplicated)

I think the bottle chain, vend mech assembly, coin mech, coin door are the same as a 51. The compressor assembly and the main doors (have a vent at the bottom) are both different on the 102.
Hey MoonDawg, Does the 102 utilize the same upper fan that a 51 uses and, if so, how do you go about replacing that if it ever goes bad? I bet it would really be a pain in the *** to switch out the whole compressor assembly!

Interesting. The best way to move this machine is to lift both doors off, it is very light then. The cabinet then measures only 19 inches from door to door, which is less than two 51's back to back(no need for rear wall insulation now, there is no rear wall). The center wall inside supports a vending belt for each side and one compressor blows cold air to both compartments.

Can it vend from both sides simultaneously or only one side at a time ?
