I have a westinghouse 42-T machine. Where do I find the exact year it and what is is worth? It runs but need work

First off welcome to the site. I may be wrong but I don't think there is a way to tell the exact year of the westinghouse machines. As for value. The book says an average complete working machine is $675. You say your machine needs some work so it is probably slightly less. This is just a book price and they seem to be slightly high compared to what machines have been selling for lately. For some reason I have noticed the 42's haven't been in high demand on ebay in the past year or so. I would say depending on condition the machine is probably worth $500. I myself really like the 42t's. They are great looking compact little machines, but one downside is they are really heavy. One way to tell when it was made is the earlier models have "Ice Cold" embossed along the bottom of the front door and are solid red. In 1955 they did away with the Embossed Ice Cold and started the two tone red and white paint. I hope this helps.

The other downside to thier popularity is the size of the bottles they will take are limited to the small. Correct me if I'm wrong but that was the reason I steered away from them in the past.

That is correct. They will only vend one flavor and only small bottles, but I think they can be converted to cans.

I'm looking at a W42T for puchase, and I too was not aware of what to offer for it as I have never seen one in person. Neat little machine with all the embossing. the one I'm looking at is the earlier one with the embossed Ice cold on the front, all red and in great condition with all insides and cools. Wondering what a fair offer would be without insulting the guy as he has dealt in pop machines in the past. Any suggestions would be great in addition to what has already been posted.

That looks to be a well cared for machine and, if it is the original paint, I imagine just as nice inside.
When the "book" value says $675 in "average" condition, there are several factors to consider:
1. The "book" was printed in 1999, which is 7 years ago. While the Internet and eBay were definately around then, both have had a HUGE impact on the collectors market.
2. "Average" condition is described as a machine that will need painting before the wife will let you put it in the house...a machine that is 95% complete (might be missing the cap catcher or coin box or something small)...the machine should run, but may not get cold...it should have little or no rust and just dings - no large dents.
Obviously a machine that is a very nice, complete original in working order (cools and vends) will bring a higher price that the $675.

Thanks for all the advice on this one... I agree it's in real nice shape, no need to restore as I like them to look a little "used" and not out of a museum. The innards are all there, it vends and cools, I saw no rust through on the tray or sides, obiously just a good cleaning would all it would really need. I'll make an offer today on it and see what happens... The guy also has two Seeburg Trashcans, one 90% complete and one shell that he might through in on the deal... ANyone interested in Seeburg Trashcan Jukes? He also has a Seeburg R that I'm working on him on but he wants 2500 for it and it currently doesn't select. We'll see... I may do a package deal on everything..

That's cool... I've always liked jukes but always had the big Wurlitzer's in mind. All the talk here about the other types has me liking them better... More character. So what's a trashcan go for?

Back to the Trashcan Talk... Markito just picked up two of them fo 600! Both need work.. I 've seen them from 800 - 2500
I know of one more locally for $1800 and it lights up, but does'nt select...
