Hammerite users beware!

Around six months ago I ordered a couple of cans of Hammerite medium green spray paint from Eastwood for a gumball machine restoration.  I was impressed with the product – great color and application was flawless.

Fast forward to couple of months ago and I order two cans of the blue Hammerite.  First can sprays normally for about five seconds, then it slows down like it’s losing pressure, then stops completely.  I figured the nozzle was clogged so I soaked it in mineral spirits and tried again.  Press the button – NOTHING.  Try the new nozzle off the other can – NOTHING.  Try a Rustoleum nozzle – NOTH… (well, you get the picture).

Shook the #### out of the unused can and tried that one – same thing.  Sprays for five seconds, slows down, stops.

I called Eastwood and they sent me two new cans of the blue – SAME THING!!  I had them send me two cans of the Hammerite red instead of a refund.  Same problem on both cans.  Now each time I’ve called Eastwood at this point they’ve acted bewildered, but now they inform me that they have discontinued the blue – they said it was a slow seller (hmmm…).  I talked to the service rep yesterday to arrange a refund and she said they’ve now discontinued the entire Hammerite line.  Again she would give no reason.

Anyway, sorry for the long story, but just want you guys to be aware.

I had problems with this and I took the spray nossle off a can of ACE paint stripper
it had a slitely larger opening and it worked great... SO I kept the little nossle.... sounds funny but it worked for me.... Wonder if it is because of the resin and other stuff (I think glass even?) that is mixed in this stuff that causes it to clog.... Don't throw them away try what I did...
And want to see that Liberty machine... Did you ever get it painted gold?....

Yes Eric, I finished up the Liberty in gold.  It's a beaut.  I don't have a digital camera at the moment  but I promise I will post some pics when I do.

I'll try some other nozzles on the Hammerite.  I kept all six cans.

Do you know if they will be discontinuing the quart and gallon cans as well; or is this only for the spray can version...?
If they are discontinuing the complete line, that's a big bummer!
I've never even looked for a similar product...

I think I'm going to call the company... they're here in Missouri...
I ordered 1 case (6 cans) of the blue and the store left the manufacturers
label on the box so I'll find out... Was wanting to use the blue to finish a floor
model candy machine.... So I hope it's just Eastwood....
Jim have you (or anyone) ever used this paint through a paint gun sprayer?
was wondering if it needed to be thinned or hardener added or how
it did with a paint sprayer.....

I just bought 2 cans of the silver from Lowe's with no problems. I got the blue from a hardware store here in town today and it worked fine. I have used the paint in a quart can and thinned it down to use in my paintgun and it works great.
If anyone has trouble finding it let me know,

As I said, the first Hammerite I used was the green and it worked like a charm.  I figured maybe it was just my batch and offered her the batch number.  That's when she said "Don't bother, we're discontinuing the the whole line."  I don't know if she meant just the spray bomb line.

If Matt has no problems with his spray cans, maybe it is just a batch issue.

Eric,

I have sprayed HammerRite via spray gun and think I get better results than the spray cans. You do have to reduce the paint; I used the HammerRite reducer to accomplish this. I'm not sure what other product(s) may be compatible to thin the paint...

I have always used the Rustoleum brand. It is great stuff and they have it in all colors. You can get it at walmart.

I've had experience with spray cans "doggin" out.  The reason for this was that the cans were old.  It seems that after a time, they lose their compression or something.  It appears that may be what happened with the Eastwood products since they said that it was a slow seller.  I've bought spray cans and taken them home and had this happen.  When I returned them to the store, they admitted that the cans had been on the shelf for a while and that was probably the problem.  I use the Rustoleum Hammered and have had no problems.  I buy it at Lowes or Menards because they rotate the product quickly.

I use the Rustoleum Hammered Finish spray bombs also.  Always work perfectly.  The Hammerite line has some great colors, though.

Well Hammerite is going to contiue to be manufactured I guess that Eastwood is dropping them
for whatever reason...
As far as colors..... yes I agree their light blue and greens are awesome.
You can call Masterchem Indudtries at 800-854-0133 X3 (Customer service)
And buy it direct as told to me or they will find a supplier close to you by zip code.

I bet Bob got a older batch that they (Eastwood) are trying to unload....
But I'm wanting to finish up a candy machine and I want to use their blue so I'm glad
their going to be around.

Also Rustoelum has their own line which has some great
colors also sold at Wal-Mart and Ace hardware stores.

I have not had any problems witht the silver cans. I also buy by it buy the quart and gallon. I have about 5 gallons in stock if anyone can confirm if they are going to discontinue it please post ASAP. I will go and clean out the local 3 Lowe's stores. I also use a brand called Hammertone. '>
