Sorry Jim. Just seen your post. East coast this year. We flew into Orlando via Toronto. Then went down to Miami and Ft Lauderdale for a couple of days. Onto the keys and then back in Orlando for eleven nights. Hem again via Toronto. Been back a few days and still on US time.

Very poor exchange rate this year so no real goodies to bring back.

Hello Guys

I posted this message over 20 years ago now. I was on vacation in the US with my toddler kids at the time. I’ve been back many times since and today I’m here again with my wife and 22year old daughter. This time we are on a small road trip around the east coast.

Many things have changed since the original post and Facebook seems to be the way to communicate these days. I really mourn this site when it was at its best. Although I do see and read many of the old members posts on the various Facebook sites and I’m a Facebook friend with some of you.

I’m not as big into collecting as I was then but I still have my room and three soda machines.

Anyways I was pondering this morning and wondering why in the US your toilet paper is only one sheet thick. At home we get all sorts of quilted papers for our bottoms. I was thinking that maybe your pipework isn’t as wide. I could of course go to Google and get this question answered in a jiffy. But I was reminiscing and thought I just might try here first. To see if there are any of the old members still around.

Good to hear from you Dave! You must be talking about the toilet paper in public restrooms and hotels.  The short answer is that it is cheaper and less likely to cause plumbing issues.  Most people buy double ply or the quilted type that you mentioned for their homes unless they are on a septic system instead of sewers.

I too miss the site in its heyday as that was probably about the time that I got into the hobby.  Before shows like Pickers and American Restoration convinced people that anything with the Coca Cola logo on it was worth more than gold.  The Facebook sites are great for keeping in touch but there seems to be a lot more people sniping each other or taking advantage of unsuspecting newbies.  I don't recall any of that on this site when I got into the hobby. As a matter of fact, I can recall several times members helping members pick up machines or hold machines so they did not miss out on a deal. The people on this site welcomed me and educated me on many different types of machines and I made several friends along the way.

Hard to believe it's been 20 years! As we're seeing here, life goes quick, so be sure to do or accomplish what you want!
Glad to have you stop by SMC and share your thoughts; although, I fear things may be coming to an end in the not too distant future with the popularity of other venues now...

Good to hear from you, Dave.  Like others, I stop in from time to time.  As others have said, the TP in public toilets is thin because thin = cheap.  Rest assured, at least at my house, we cater to our backsides by purchasing the thicker stuff.
