Krylon vs. rustoleum 2nd month summary

Howdy all,
Man where did this month go?  Seems like I just did the first month post last week!  I don't have pics this month, wife took the digital camera with her and the kids to the in-laws (vacation).  Great part is I now have tons of free time to work on machines!

Last month I noted that the krylon shelves were already oxidizing and the rustoleum shelves had no apparent wear.  After anonther month of use the oxidatin on the krylon shelves appears to have slowed considerably.  There's very little change between this month and last month.  The krylon paint no longer comes off on the fingers or on a rag as it did last month.  Appearance of the krylon has dulled some but not nearly as much as it did in the first month.  Bottom line:  it still appears duller than the rustoleum and any and all "discrepancies" (i.e. scratches, pits, etc) covered by the paint show up very plainly.

The rustoleum still shows no wear and is as bright and shiny as the day I sprayed it.  If I hadn't marked the unfinished and finished shelves, I would have no idea which is which.

In the last month the products on the shelves were swapped such that shelves previously carrying glass products next carried plastic and vice versa.  For the next month, the products will be switched back.

This is good to know. I have been debating on what to use on my Cavailer. Needs a little something more than cleaning, but was unsure what to go with.

I'll keep following your post and decide on your findings.

Oh yeah, I'm making that trip to Destin in Nov!!!

Thanks for the votes of confidence.  It's just nice to finally be able to provide some useful information.  I feel like I ask more questions than I answer, so just wanted to find a way to give back a little.  Honestly, I'm depressed at the results so far.  I was hoping the Krylon would hold up as well in a cold environment.  I like the hammertone, but was hoping to find something that would look closer to nickel plating without the cost and would hold up as well.  But then it's also fun to put my labrat brain to work!

I hope the Rustoleum Hammer wins cause I have already completed interior with it. I was confident with the product. I had previously used it on the wheel rims for my ATV. It has held up beautifully under extreme conditions.

I have a friend who painted his  truck bed with black hammertone. Has hauled off brush & wood
and it has held up pretty good... And all mine is gonna do is use on the interior of a soda machine...
 I think I'm gonna go with the Hammertone on my 56 & 39 interior......

Doug - don't think there's much too worry about.  Between Eric's 2 month report and the past experience of others its certainly durable.  I used Hammerite rather than Rustoleum (Eric here's a matchup for your next test....) and I painted all my metal parts (I mean ALL) except the captive link mechanism parts in the vending assembly.  Will do those parts on my next machine....  Just didn't do it on this (first) machine as I didn't know how thick it went on and wasn't sure what the tolerances were for the link mechs.

That's not a bad idea.  A True Value nearby me (in Bath) carries hammerite.  And I've got four untreated shelves in the same machine I'm using for the rustoleum/krylon test.  Hmmmmm....it'll have to wait until September as I'll be leaving for Norfolk, VA tomorrow to get my eyes fixed (PRK surgery) and also picking up a WC-44SK on the way!!!  So if worse comes to worse and I come back blind, I'll just have my wife paint the shelves for me!!
