Cav 871

Hi,

I'm finally getting around to restoring this machine.  I've got it stripped apart and have a few questions.

Is the metal sheet (usually gold or silver stripes) glued to the bottom door panel?  I'm assuming that this needs to be removed before painting or do you guys just mask it off?  Mine feels like it is glued on and I'm afraid that I'll bend it if I try to remove it.

Where do you guys get stainless steel replacement screws?  I've looked at Menard's, but they don't have the ones I need.

Do you remove the coin return bezel and then pop rivet it back on?

I'm sure I'll have more questions during this restoration.  

P.S.  When did they start putting "safe" insulation in these machines?

I screwed up.  The only tag on the machine was on the compressor and said it was an CAV 871.  However, I browsed through the photos and it is a CCS-64 with a different paint scheme.

Nix the question on the coin return bezel.  It has metal tabs instead of rivets.  Guess I should have checked more closely.

Would still like to know if you guys/gals take the "lined" metal trim off the bottom of the door and around the coin entry or just mask it off or paint over it.

As far as the stainless steel hardware, I get almost all of mine from Lowes / a local hardware store. I found that Menards (at least my local store and sounds like your's too!) usually has pretty apoor selection when it comes to stainless steel fasteners.

That makes more sense. A machine that holds 871 bottles would be HUGE!!!! '>

Hey Lulu - can you post pics of the metal sheet you're talking about?  Might help understand what part you mean.  I didn't think they glued any parts on - unless it was some restoration effort gone awry.

I've found stainless steel screws in Ace Hardware, Lowes and HD.  Usually grouped with their specialty parts because they are stainless and more expensive than std stock.

Their was a post on insulation earlier this yr and I don't think anyone had a pat answer.  I would err on the side of saftey and assume your machine has the bad stuff and act accordingly.

Thanks for the info.  I picked up some screws at Home Depot, but they didn't have the size that I really wanted.  

That insulation was nasty!!  It's definately going to go.  Ate away at the bottom of the tub and shell, too.

I'll try to post a picture of the machine.

Lulu - depending on how desparate you are for the stainless screws you might want to try an online seller.  I googled stainless steel screw and found a couple interesting sites like Stainless Fasteners
or Bolt Depot.

If you end up using somebody online will you post your satisfaction with them... I'm thinking that I'll buy in bulk before I start my VMC77.

Thought I'd close out the thread on the "hunt" for stainless steel fasteners.  I bought enough stainless steel hardware to do at least two machines from Bolt Depot for less (even including $10 shipping) than the price I paid at Home Depot for hardware that would do less than a full machine.  Really happy with the service.  Ordered online in specific quantities for some parts and by the box (100 pieces) for most of the screws.  Delivery was in about 4 days (Boston to AZ).  Everything was labeled and bagged separately.  All in all, real happy.

Thanks for the info on the screws.  I ended up picking up what I needed at a  "Mom and Pop's" hardware store.  I wanted to get the machine back together before I forgot how it went back together.  I've got to paint the compressor and etc. and then I'll try to post a picture.

Did you ever figure out a solution to repainting/masking off the control panel gold trim?

What I found was that the control panel had a metal sheet glued to it with charcoal and silver horizontal lines on it.  I ended up taking a putty knife and removing it.  The lines were faded and worn.  The machine had the same metal sheet on the front at the bottom.  I pulled that off, too.  I painted the control panel hammertone and the front/bottom red.  I saved the metal in case I don't like the looks of the hammertone.

I buy all my stainless steel hardware from a place in Bakersfield call budget bolt. They are a fastener warehouse. I buy mine in 100 piece bags. I bought me a couple of the plastic bins with the pull drawers to keep everything seperated. These warehouses will sell you one or 100's and they are alot cheaper on the price than Lowe's and other dept. stores. Just look in your local yellow pages under fasteners and you should be able to locate a warehouse that's in your area. '>

Further explanation on the drawers Terry mentioned. You can buy them pre-filled and labeled. Eg.#6, #8, #10 philips head sheet metal screws, each diameter comes in 6 different lengths.  Same with #6 #8 #10 machine screws, all lenghts also nuts.  Even a set of larger compressor bolts. and nuts.
      Then re-order only the sizes used most often.

   Also, #8 X 1/2" philips panhead sheet metal screw is so common I order 500 at a time. Probably use 50 on each machine, if also replacing door liner.
