Howdy all,
Sorry for being a bit off topic here but I wanted to get some input on an idea that I'd like to work on this summer.
Many of us seem to also collect jukeboxes but I notice that there is not a site similar to this one where ideas and questions can be presented to a knowledgeable audience.  I have found the jukebox listserve but it's just not as cool and easy as this site.
Could someone give me pointers on setting up such a site, almost a carbon copy of this discussion area, for jukebox enthusiasts?
Thanks for your input.

Sounds cool to me - I'll be there!
Sorry, can't give you any pointers.  Let me know when you are up for some suggestions though.

Well I don't know much about juke boxes, but websites are my realm..

1. Hosting - cheap shared space (virtual hosting) - I can reccomend a company if you want..

2. Domain name - cheap and easy to register (just find the cheapest deal you can)

3. Software - Ikonboard is free, so if you want a CC of this place, that's your best bet..

I'm happy to help in any way I can..  would be cool to see such a site.. (I have always wanted a jukebox, but sadly it's not within my budget)

Thanks for the replies guys.  I may have to take you up on your offer to help.  I'm afraid it's been several years since I tried to design a website.  Does the iconboard software help you to design the page top to bottom?  I'm not at all familiar with html.  The last page I made I just used a "wysiwyg" html editor and got easy but semi-satisfactory results.  Skeleton Man, which hosing service do you reccomend and which html editor?  Thanks!

I reccommend Nirmani, been with them 2 years myself and never a problem.

Ikonboard powers the whole forum (ie. every page you see in the discussions section of this site)

As far as WYSIWYG editors, I would suggest Macromedia Dreamweaver..

Skeleton Man- Thanks for the link to Nirmani, I'll have to check further in to it.  Right now I have stuff on Comcast's servers (s l o w) and web redirects with Fortune City (it was fine when it was V3, but now I've been having tons of problems).

Lonestaraggie- Dreamweaver is the way to go.  They offer some pretty sweat deals to students (heck, sign up for a class on Dreamweaver at your local college).  I have some stuff on my site that can get you started with Dreamweaver: http://www.mr-barber.com and go to Teacher Resources.

AJ,

I can also set you up on my server, register a domain name($20 for two years) if all else fails and assist with Ikonboard Setup as I've done many of these installations...
Do a little homework and let us know which direction you want to go in...

Sounds great Jim.  Is it the domain registration that's $20 per year or the space on your server?  I'll gladly take you up on your offer to help out and renting your server space sounds excellent to me.  I'm not planning to do this for profit really, just to see if I can do it and if it will take off like this site has.  I'm thinking that I'll incorporate just enough ads to make it break even.  I just found a copy of the html editor I used a long time ago (AOLpress 2.0) to build my old web page and it's exremely user friendly despite being a dinosaur of a program.  Thanks for the offers and I look forward to hearing back.

Out of interest, who do you host with Jim ?

A J: looks like you have hosting covered, hosting on SMC server would be a cheap option '<img'>

Chris,

I utilize Verio.
The original company I used was Highway/RapidSite, but Verio made them an offer they couldn't refuse. As a matter of fact, Verio still incorporates RapidSite products in there server line...

And AJ,
The $20 I mentioned is for a two year domain name registration. For one year of server location, I can sell it for $144 for 12 months($12 a month) if you purchase for the complete year. Grand total for a year is $164.
I don't want to burst your bubble, but you might want to look for a slightly more robust web site development tool. PM me and I can go into more detail as this is getting off topic a little...

Additionally, even if you should to go with someone else, I'm still here for some assistance!

Hopefully helpful...

Thanks to all of you for your support!  This sounds like it is going to really happen.
I agree, this definitely off topic.  Any more ideas or info are welcome but IM would probably be best.  I look forward to hearing from you.

I sell old Coke machines. My customers are also the buyers of jukeboxes and slot machines.
If your site develops, maybe add a link on SMC or post  the new web address. I will send them your way.

Thanks.

Hey Mark,
sorry to say that this summer turned out to be not as relaxing as I had thought.  I'm still planning on firing up that site sometime this year but I haven't had a great deal of time to sit down and figure out the software that Jim was kind enough to send my way (Thanks again Jim!).  I'll get back with you all when I have more info.  Thanks for your interest.
