Hey Guys,
I'm in the middle of a cooler resto and my paint guy ran into an issue with the vinyl masking stickers, when he tried to peel them off it took off the paint underneath, he said it even took off his primer in some areas,
he assured me he was using quality paint, the only thing I can think of is that he was working in a cold garage not a paint booth with heat
I am having some new stickers made, any ideas for how he can avoid the trouble next time?

I've had the same issues, hence why I don't use the masking method...
others have had great luck with it..?

This question should be directed towards the sign company. They are probably making the mask from vinyl for you
but you need to request they use a masking material, which does not use as strong a bond.

talked to the sign people, they said they definitely used the masking vinyl, who knows maybe they screwed up and made it on regular vinyl and don't want to admit it...

A few things it may be :
How long did your painter allow for the paint to cure ?
I always wait a few days before applying tape or masking to fresh paint...
Paint Needs time to cure. Esp. In winter months.
Also.. Painting in a cold garage is not a good idea... The paint should be able to dry and cure in a warm environment.
It's kinda like baking it on.
The 3rd idea.. Bad prep. Did he use proper etch primer and wax and greeae remover before painting ?

Has to be the prep or the paint wasn't cured... IF he is using the right type of vinyl... the vinyl should just peal right off. Was wondering how it was going.. dang... it was looking great too...  |

Hate to say it but once the primer is dry its dry its not moving . And as far as the paint goes if it was solevent and applied right it should be dry after 15-20 min . Sounds like over application in a cold environment.

I had the issue once when a machine was soda blasted and not cleaned off properly prior to priming.
