I think the USS machines were about the last glass door vendors out there, since they could do both bottles and cans.  They were manufactured until the mid-70's, so presumably the signs and paint were updated in the early to mid eighties.

I've actually thought about swapping in a good cooling system to a good cabinet like this one seems to be, but I wouldn't give $350 for
one of these with a bad compressor, I don't care what bottle door is on it.

Ah, an "aftermarket" Pepsi USS, you don't see many of those. They actually look pretty cool. I still prefer the Coca-Cola though.

Could you not swap in a cooling system from a woodgrain CSS if you had one? Are there any wiring differences or differences in the decks to look out for?

So there are no major differences between the woodgrain-era CSS cooling system and the 80's USS, except for possibly age?

The way I understand it, the compressor itself is supposed to plug into the main wiring harness like you were plugging it directly into the wall, is that right? Is the entire deck powered through this very short cord, or just the compressor?

The only major difference is the vending rack, shelves, and the overall width of the USS vs. CSS.  Signs, coin doors, bezels, cap catcher, coin box, etc. are all the same.

Pretty much all of the cooling units are the same, when you are swapping them out you're looking at splicing in the evap fan unless it still has the standard disconnect and reconnecting/splicing some of the wires at the main power distro block that's inside the cabinet.

I have finally got my everyday USS64 out of storage after two years, and I'm concerned about the compressor.  That machine I posted might be a great donor unit if things don't work out this week!

You mean the Pepsi machine? It's kind of a shame that's it's messed up, the styling doesn't look too bad. I'm not sure about the black though. I know they were trying to incoporate the period Pepsi styling into it, but it just seems it should be more blue.

Maybe it's all the 50's-60's Pepsi slant shelves I've seen in photos, but I'm thinking it needs more blue.

Yep, that Pepsi machine.  Not a fan of the later styling on it, but I think it would make a great machine redone in the early dark Pepsi blue.  I have a cabinet that was once painted in a Harley theme that is very clean that will eventually be done in the dark blue.  My everyday USS machine cabinet is just about shot, but I bought it for $25 off a member here about 8 years ago and it served me faithfully for those years without any problems. 

These also make really great and easy re-advertised machines, I have had the plexi cut to size and applied decals for sports teams.
