Ask if they use cocoa leaves. I believe it to be inthe original recipe.  Smiley

Yes, a key ingredient in the 1886 Coke was cocaine. Back in those days most medicines were just alcohol.  A good shot of whiskey will cure anything.

I was told its use was discontinued in 1905. Somehow, I don't think they're using the "original" formula.

Maybe it's the formula for "New Coke".

YUK!!!  That stuff was awful. And to think even Bill Cosby couldn't sell it.  I could never figure out why Coke would change it's formula to be more like Pepsi.

Glad you guys liked the video. This was there comment about coca leaf I found below their video.

We didn't forget anything. We made a fluid extract of coca leaf as the video explains, using de-cocainized coca leaves just like Coca Cola has done since 1903. The cocaine was definitely NOT forgotten, just intentionally omitted.

Pretty neat, I'd like to try some...maybe when I'm up in MN in January...if I don't freeze on the way there.

Along the same lines, did anyone see the Drunk History episode on Atlanta?  They did a skit on the invention of Coca Cola; for anyone not familiar with the show, they basically get a historian drunk and then celebrities re-enact the skit using the words of the drunk historian...not for everyone but it's a riot.

Here's the preview, I can't find the full episode anywhere right now:

I remember back in the day reading the High Times Encyclopedia of Recreational Drugs and they had a section on why cocaine was removed from the recipe.  Blacks use to drink this elixir a lot and there were riots at one time caused black Coca Colaholics.

I found this on the web and this is what I remember reading years ago.  I couldn't tell you if it was true or not, I wasn't born yet.

"Anyone with a nickel, black or white, could now drink the cocaine-infused beverage. Middle-class whites worried that soft drinks were contributing to what they saw as exploding cocaine use among African-Americans. Southern newspapers reported that "negro cocaine fiends" were raping white women, the police powerless to stop them. By 1903, [then-manager of Coca-Cola Asa Griggs] Candler had bowed to white fears (and a wave of anti-narcotics legislation), removing the cocaine and adding more sugar and caffeine."

I've got a couple of Nichol Kola bottles that says "Decocainized" on the list of ingredients on the backside.  laugh
