One of my cavilers compressors will not shut off. I swapped the T stat with another machine and it didn't solve the problem. What should I trouble shoot next? Can it be a relay? The compressor will turn off manually with the T stat dial.

Is the machine cooling OK?
It sounds like you might have either a refrigerant problem or the evaporater fan is not working or something worse.

it may be time for a new thermostat. they're wired just like a temperature controlled "light-switch" it's either on or off, so if it's stuck "on" try to give it a playful "rap" on the nose ( the knob-shaft) with the handle end on a screwdriver, sometimes the contacts just weld themselves together & stick closed (On) ...  |

It gets really cold. The evap fan runs strong. The evap coils ice over. T stat is from a css-84 that works fine. I will knock it with a rubber mallet but I think it's something else. The line does have a tap on it.

don't use a mallet, use a screwdriver handle & a light "tap pity-tap" , or if you're determined to crush the poor thing, how's about a nice brick? is the T-stat out of your CSS-84 the same type as the one you're trying to replace? and does the sensing end mount in the same spot? ( in the air vs mounted on the evap' coil housing ) or just replace the thermostat for Pete's sake. I'm out...

The CSS and USS are similar. T stats are mounted in the same place. By the way I need a new fan for the CSS, where can I buy one?

Johnstom supply or grainger will have replacement fan motors. If the comp is shutting off with the switch that tells you the problem is from the thermostat. I have one that the contacts stick sometimes and a tap wiyh a screw driver makes it open. Johnnie is right replace t stat. good luck

If you have already switched the thermostat with a similar "known working" unit and it acts the same, I'm not sure a brand new one will work any better. If they both manually switch off the compressor, the wiring must be ok too.
I would suggest moving the capillary tube to different locations on the evaporator, as it seems there may be a cold sensing problem.

I moved the capillary tube to the coil on the evaporator and it shut off. It looks like I need to buy two new t stats now. I bought one from someone here in the past but can't recall who it was. Can I get one from Johnston supply? |
