New Decision to make on my USS-8-64 Clean up

Progressing on the cleanup of my USS-8-64.  I've scrubbed all the bottle shelves and most of the interior.  I know a number of the posts I've read say that people are spraying their shelves with Hammertone.  I've looked at Rustoleum's tech sheets and they recommend Not to use it over galvanized metals.  They recommend the Cold Galvanizing Compound.  Any thoughts?  I'm really leaning toward not painting them at all.  I feel that the bare galvanized steel looks more authentic.  The shelves certainly don't look the prettiest, even after scrubbing, soaking in CLR and even a little rubbing with 400 grit Emory paper on the tough spots.  They have a good deal of discolorization where there was oxidation, though no actual rust.  The same with all the interior except the bottom of the cooler.  It's all sound, just not pretty, and they don't really get seen except when open for loading.  Also there are logo marks from the Steel Mill on the interior and if I were to spray the interior to match the shelves, if I sprayed them, the logo's would get covered. Any opinions?

When I got mine I just cleaned everything up and loaded it with soda!  I enjoy the machine daily!  You can always do more restoration work down the road.

I would like to get it filled & running soon.  One other thing that I want to clean that may be difficult is the bottle door glass.  There is a significant amount of dirt and maybe some mildew between the layers of glass/plexi.  How difficult is it to take those layers apart.  It looks like the foam gasket has an adhesive holding the layers together.  Also It's missing the drip pan from underneath.  I'm looking for one or  something to fit in it's place.

The glass isn't too bad to take out, you can remove the screws and retaining clip on the handle side of the door, and the panes should angle out.  There is an adhesive foam, but all the ones that I have taken off, the adhesive is only on one side of the glass, so you can pull the panes apart and clean them.

Thanks, I'll give it a try after I finish cleaning out the cooler.  I'm still working on cleaning and light sanding on the vending mech. I'll probably finish with that in the next couple evenings, though I keep getting distracted by working on my tax returns. Never enough hours in the day.

I used hammertone on my Vendo 63 shelves.  They look great and are holding up fine.  The hammertone dries to a hard finish and is really easy to use.

Do you have any pics?  Did you use the Rustoleum Hammertone? I might get a can and test it out.

Hi JDAugie,  What you will find is with the 3 piece glass pane unit you will get condensation between the layers because they are not sealed they are justed sandwiched together with adhesive foam. I think Tim had this happen and so did I. ...(not sure if this is just a Michigan "high humidity" problem) What I brought was a sealed two glass pane unit and this fixed the condensation problem. Fun-tronics sells a unit for your machine for $32.00. The unit I got was a little narrower then the original so I added a layer of adhesive foam from home depot. You don't see and it works good .

Use Hammertone not Krylon. Awhile back a member did a great 6 month test. I can search and find a link but returns "Object Not Found" so guessing the post was lost in an update :-).
As I recall surface prep didn't need to be that great with the Hammertone. Wire wheel and wipe down with acetone and should be good to go.

I'd have liked to have seen the final results.  But the Hammertone looks good. I'm tempted to do the shelves.  I already sprayed one shelf with the Cold Galvanizing spray but it seems very "flat" looking.   I think I'll cover it with the Hammertone, though the Hammertone instructions say not to prime and the Galvanizing instructions say not to cover with an oil base paint.  Also thanks rayg for the info on the door glass.  I'm going to try to take it apart and clean it.  If I run in to trouble, It's good to know Funtronics has the glass kit.

I did use the Rustoleum Hammertone.  It is addictive, once you use it you are going to want to find other things to paint with it.  It looks just like a factory finish.

I've finished the clean-up for now, here a a couple pics.  I'm holding off on the heavy painting till spring, when I can open up for air.  I made sope magnets for the product selection. and touched up the scratches on the side.

Making the magnets wasn't too hard.  I printed out some 1x1 logo pics that I put together in paintshop, then Glued them to some metal flashing.  I got a roll of 1 inch wide stick on magnet from a craft store an cut some 1" squares of that and stuck it on the plastic vending levers then stuck the metal squares on that.
