Regarding the restoration, i used to think the same thing after doing an Ideal 35 cooler and a Glasco Cooler.. PITA for sure. all that tar and crap.
BUT... I recently acquired an orange crush ideal slider and decided to restore it.. and was pleasantly suprised... NO TAR... and the refredgeration was not al soldered together , it had connectors that where easy to remove and cap .
THe refridgeration came out easily, the tub just slide right out with lines attached. and insulation came out in panels.. assembly wasn't much different than doing an 81.. after paint work, reinstall new insulation slider tub back in with aid of another person and cardboard. Rehook up refridgeration , recharge and walla... so check to see if it's tarred in or not.. if no sign of tar , you might have an easier restoration.. Just thought I'd share...
