I have spoken with several people not associated with this site about my recently acquired Mexican cooler (pictured below) - people that have been restoring machines for decades. Nobody that I have spoken with so far has ever seen one and the consensus among them it is very cool looking and that I should leave it as-is. I still have 3-4 people I am waiting to hear from.
It can be used, displayed and enjoyed just like it is.
So I thought I would put up a poll for everybody. We never do polls here, so what is your vote?

all of you are wrong. The original patina is the best look for a lot of items this being one of them. If the paint was all gone or a different color then I would. I am leaving my 81 Pepsi alone as it looks nice the way it it used. Sometimes when a item is restored the question then comes up if it is a repo.

Unrestored...at least for the time being.
It is original only once and you can restore it at anytime. And another cool side effect of waiting is you can tell stories about this find and people can experience the patina for them selves.

I think all my 81s look a lot better restored then if i left them all rusty. Take before and after photos and display next to cooler, everyone who comes over loves to see that. They all say i never new you could take such an old thing and bring it back to life

I restored a very rare Coca Cola Trash can for Jeff Wolf that no one had ever seen , I took alot of original photos so there would be no question that it was an original Coke Trash Can. Take pictures and restore it. Good luck.

Send it to me and I will hang on to it while you think about it! At that point, I would rather owe it back to you than cheat you out of it! But seriously folks - - - While I am a big fan of the original machines, I also love seeing all of the restored machines in Jeff's (and everyone else's) collection--they will insure that these classic machines will live on far longer than any of us. That being said, I would keep it original for a while until you have a firm idea of what the restoration will entail. As everyone has suggested--take plenty of pictures and display them next to the cooler upon restoration. You have a very neat item there. Geez--I kind of sound like a politician with that answer. Tim

Well so far (from the replies) the restore-it's appear to have the vote - it will be interesting to see how it turns out (assuming everyone submits a vote a the top of the page).
Regardless of the outcome, it will sit as-is for a while as I have a lot of other projects to do and it doesn't take up a lot of room (sorry Tim!). The other issue I am grappling with is how it should look. As most of you all know, I am a purist and I like items to look like they just came off the assembly line. And therein lies the issue for me - I don't know what this cooler looked like since the bottom has been cut off. So far nobody (on this site or that I've talked to) has ever seen this model before. I may have a prototype or something and may never know, but I would be more inclined to restore it if I knew what it looked like. At least now I have more eyes looking around, so if anybody ever sees it in movies, flyers, whatever...please let me know.
For now cast your vote everyone! You might sway me in one direction or another.

To me, depends on how far gone it is.. though very solid and hard to find.. the lower half has rust... rust will continue unless you treat it... There are a lot of machines and gas pumps that are a 7 out of 10 that look great left as found.... but this one, to me is past that line, If it were mine I'd do my best to find what it originally looked like... and restore to just off the line condition. stuff this rare deserves that... I will say my Nichol kola cooler was as solid and as nice as this and there is no way after it was painted that I would would go back and leave it in the condition it was in.... It survived being cut up and deserved to be brought back... I would'nt do all the bells and whistles as I agree that it can go beyond a restoration and look fake... At the very least treat the rust and do something to remove the bolts/screws and support arms.... But after all is said and done... it's yours to do what you want..... In short ....restore.

I'm also a big fan of "original", even in a "restored" version! However, there's a fine line when a piece needs to be restored or left as is... In this case, I think the rust through needs attention and this caused me to vote for a restoration.

I voted. I'd take pics and restore it. That piece would look great restored. I'm a big fan of those Mexican coolers. Like Mr. Wolf stated, he's glad he had all his 81's restored. I'm glad I had my Orange Crush 39 restored. Here's a pic of me in Chicago after I restored it. LOL Actually I made it for a guy in Texas

Thankyou. Made a Pepsi 1 the year before for a guy in Italy and then a guy from Texas wanted a crushy. Everything was sreened on. No decals. The embossing was painted tho. Had a great guy in Minnesota who made me silk screens ( R.I.P Flash) for almost every brand even with the trade marks in the tails. Screens for 39's, 81's sliders 7-up crushy etc. I know the Coca Cola Jack everyone refers to on here as well and everytime Jeff walters wanted to peel off the door liner to check the Hires etc. Jack wanted $200. LOL Walters never would pay it. LOL

well.. if a big difference in size... it may have been a counter top type cooler that the bottom just rusted out on... which you may just have to have a bottom fabricated and be done with it and not worry about legs or how tall....

I've thought of that, but the drain hole is on the bottom. So it wasn't a countertop cooler when new. I could change the drain hole, but I hate to do that. I'm gonna do all I can to find something out about it. As I said, it will be a while before I get to it.

Like most have said, restore, one to preserve it and prevent further damage... but restore it back to original, don't go crazy with pinstriping, Sprite boy decals and big 10 cent decals.. I'd even shy away from clearcoating, us a single stage enamel, like origianlly used... It'll look great!

I voted to restore. Talking about bogus soda machines, when Jeff Walters came out with his Classic Soda Machines Book in 1992 he included pictures of a Pepsi and a 7up VMC 44. I told him VMC never made those and to ask the guys that were selling them to show him the inside of the main door. Since they were selling them for $8000 up, they refused (Regular restored 44's sold for 4000 at that time). He soon got it right and in his 2nd edition in 1995 he removed the pictures. I know Jack also and have for a very long time and I know he sells some wild 81's that were never manufactured, but I still like the guy, he's about as smooth as a rat tailed file but he's his own man and that's ok with me.

DO NOT RESTORE. Preserve it in my opinon. I would remove that bracket thing and anything else that looks "added" . Buff whats left and see what you've got. Sometimes you can strategicly paint in areas and "age" the paint. I recenty did that to my Stoner. Looks original and vintage. I think especially with coolers, when they are restored and people have to ask you if it's old or not, it takes away from it.

I voted to restore also, I agree something is only original one time. But you have to look at the overall condition, if it were only worn paint, or the bracket that was added on the front, fine leave original. But I believe Tom stated the bottom had been cut? If it has do you still consider it original? It's not the way it came out of the factory anymore. It has the badge on the front and the I.D. tag. so plenty of before pics, to prove it was an original piece and restore. thats my 2 cents

The bottom has been cut off and a flat white piece of sheetmetal (with corners bent up) placed over the bottom. The brackets hold the sheetmetal in place. If I were to remove the brackets, the bottom [and whatever they used to insulate - 1930's US silver certificates - ] would fall out.

Maybe they used this cooler to transport a kilo or 2 of coke and thats why the bottom has been put back on that way? I think you should probably get rid of that machine before you get caught with the contraband.
