Hi guys:

not sure how to put this as dont want to upset anyone...........

but.................................................................................


has any of the restorers or individuals ever restored a machine

especially maybe an 81/39 and not repainted the metal but just

highly polished it up & lacquered the steel, for that industrial look.


or maybe just painted the embossing

& left the door and or cabinet steel?


reason i am asking is that in UK [& US] a lot of the old painted

vintage office desks [tanker desks etc] & painted filing cabinets

are stripped to give the industrial look and command high prices


its just a twist on the fantasy machine i suppose


in the UK we see so few machines i was wondering whether anyone

had seen one or had pix of one to share.


i have a restored 81D [and am not going to strip that to see how it would look!]


however I do also have an unrestored 81A, which does need restoring and was

wondering, just wondering how it may come out.........................................?!

what do you think?!

I have also alwasy thought, hmm wonder what a machine would look like if not painted up.. would kinda be like those stainless steel picnic coolers that are polished and just the coke lettering is red.. those do look cool..

The problem would be the body work.. as all machines need a certain degree of body work and usually most use body filler for the small dents and such...so not sure how to get around that.. if the machine didn't need much body work, then I guess with the right kind of polish and buffing could look pretty cool...

here is a door that is stripped down and sanded getting ready for primer.. so might give you somewhat of an idea of what it might look like..

thx for the pix,

that gives me a pretty good start point


i understand about the bodywork issues on most machines

but if its only dents that you are filling, the purpose of the

filler is really for the paint job, if its being polished/lacquered

then a few dents here and there are not an issue as it only

adds to the feel of an aged industrial look, ie a machine that

has stood the test of time etc.

obviously if the metal has rusted thru and been patched and

then filled/smoothed for painting then thats not really great

for the polished/lacquered look.


i see the door on the pix are 81b complete with the stainless

trim clip holes to separate the red/white apintwork,

on an original 81A, they were all red of course so this would not be

an issue


maybe i get the front door and coin door stripped/blasted and take

it from there, as it would have to be blasted anyway if it were to be

repainted in original colours anyway

I wouldn't do it either listen to Dave, you know it makes sense...Restore it. or just leave it as is, i have seen it briefly and it looks good to me. Thought you were selling it to my mate?... If Daves been waiting 3 years for it i suppose he's first. i am still waiting for the price on the dodgem car............Come on Neil make your mind up!!! Is Dave having the 81a??? I have one as well now...
