I think the version Matt has also has a switch to turn on a light/fan combination when the door is closed...

Tom,
The wooden Western Electric booths came with air vents that were cast, and prone to breaking easily. No one is repopping the louvers, so you'll see  lights or plates installed to hide the opening at least cover it.  

I may be wrong, but I think it wasn't until the glass and metal booths started getting popular that the marquis was lit topside.
