Grinding noise (possible bad bearings?)

Hey guys,
On my CVB-106, I have a horrible metal-on-metal sound coming from the machine. The friend I got the machine from kept saying something about the compressor, but it cools just fine.
The guy that services the machines at my office mentioned possibly the bearings from the description I gave, and suggested WD-40 ing around the bearing to try that.
Well I was unable to locate where the bearing ACTUALLY are, so I sprayed around the fan before plugging the joker back up. It ran fine for a short while, (20 minutes or so), then stated again. Basically it sounds like brakes on a car rubbing metal to metal. I tried to see if the fan slowed down while this noise is happening, but I could not tell any difference in the fan speed nor a wobble that would tell me the fan blades themselves were rubbing on anything.
I adjusted the thermostat to the off position, and the fan stopped running and so did the noise. I have adjusted the fan to slightly past the off position (it was turned all the way up) but this hasn't helped either.
Any ideas on what could be making this horrible nosie and the best way to go about fixing it?
Thanks,
Chris

Replace the fan motor. I'd replace both while I'm at it.

The lower fan motor bearings are worn. $25.00 buys a BRAND NEW motor, such an easy fix
